Case Studies

Connahs Quay Power Station

At Connahs Quay Power Station, our team was brought in to upgrade and correct another company’s previous work that did not meet the required standards. The project demanded precision,  technical expertise, and a commitment to doing things
right.

Within our in-house facility, hundreds of aluminium tubular buzz pipes were carefully reworked. Each component underwent treatment with a gentle, non-metallic blast media to achieve a perfectly clean and consistent surface. A high-performance,
water-based coating system was then applied, engineered for durability, protection,
and longevity.

In total, over 200 buzz pipes and elbows were completed at Hunter Steel Ltd each one brought up to specification with meticulous attention to detail. On-site, our team tackled 80 large buzz bars, executing a complex operational setup designed to protect the station’s surrounding technical structures. Every stage
was planned with precision to ensure safety, compliance, and flawless results.
By completion, more than 3,250 square meters of surface area had been expertly treated, transformed into a showcase of quality and reliability. This project stands as
a testament to our expertise, our problem-solving capabilities, and our unwavering
commitment to excellence.

Stillages for Honda

When Honda UK Manufacturing needed a reliable partner to refurbish thousands of
steel stillages for their production operations, they turned to Hunter Steel Ltd and we delivered results that exceeded expectations.

Over the course of the project, we refurbished approximately 3,000 stillages, each meticulously restored to meet Honda’s strict quality and durability standards.
This large-scale undertaking covered an impressive total surface area of more
than 40,000 square metres — the equivalent of nearly six football pitches.

To ensure long-lasting protection and a high-quality finish, our team applied nearly
15,000 litres of industrial-grade paint, specially formulated for resilience in demanding manufacturing environments. Every stillage was stripped, treated, and coated using advanced techniques to maximise performance and lifespan.

The result?
A fleet of refurbished stillages ready to rejoin Honda’s production lines, extending
their usability and maintaining operational efficiency – all while supporting the
company’s sustainability goals by reusing existing materials instead of manufacturing
new ones.

Urenco Nuclear Waste

Steel, Paint & Precision: Our Role in Urenco Nuclear Waste

At Urenco Nuclear Waste, safety, precision, and longevity are paramount. That’s why Hunter Steel were entrusted with the critical task of treating over 750 steel stillages, applying approximately 1,000 litres of high-performance paint, and ensuring each unit met the rigorous standards required for nuclear material handling.

Blast cleaning revealed the pristine steel beneath, while our durable coatings provided robust protection against corrosion and wear, ensuring the longevity and safety of these essential containers.

This facility, once used in the uranium enrichment process, has now been successfully decommissioned, showcasing Urenco’s commitment to
responsible nuclear stewardship and environmental safety. From precision cleaning to protective coatings, we ensure that every stillage is ready
for the future of nuclear waste management.

McClaren Racing

Keeping McLaren Racing at Full Speed

In Formula One, every second counts and that precision extends beyond the track. Hunter Steel Ltd (who are big F1 fans!) ensured McLaren Racing’s operations ran flawlessly by abrasive blast cleaning and applying high-performance coatings to three 15-metre long overhead cranes and their associated steelwork.

These cranes are essential for moving Formula One cars, engines, and critical equipment with millimetre-perfect accuracy. Our coatings provide durable protection against corrosion and wear, ensuring the cranes remain reliable under the intense demands of Formula One operations.

Fun Fact: Formula One teams rely on equipment like these cranes just as much as the cars themselves. Without them, moving multi-million-pound machines safely and efficiently would be impossible.

Hunter Steels work keeps McLaren Racing running at peak performance—precision, protection, and F1-ready speed.

Airbus

Keeping Airbus Flying: Our Industrial Expertise in Action

When it comes to aerospace, precision and reliability are non-negotiable and that’s exactly what we delivered at Airbus Broughton.

Over the course of 200 separate contracts, our team at Hunter Steel Ltd has treated more than 5,000 tonnes of steelwork, restored over 50 overhead crane beams, and refurbished three specialist trailers over 15 meters long – critical vehicles used to transport new plane wings.

Did you know? During COVID, Airbus couldn’t get new trailers manufactured, making our work essential for keeping production moving and planes on schedule.

Every beam, trailer, and contract was handled with meticulous care, ensuring safety, durability, and operational excellence.

From structural steel to massive transport trailers, our work helped Airbus stay airborne. Industrial precision, aerospace standards, and expertise you can trust.

JCB Uttoxeter

Fast Track to the Finish: Our Emergency Work for JCB Uttoxeter

When JCB calls, you answer fast. On a Friday morning, we received an urgent call from JCB Headquarters – their production line needed over 100 spray booth grids completely stripped, and time was ticking.

By that afternoon, the grids arrived at our facility. Our team immediately got to work, abrasive blast cleaning each one to bare metal, restoring them to like-new condition. Working through the weekend, every grid was stripped, inspected, and ready for transport back to JCB by Monday morning—just in time to keep their operations running without a hitch.

Liverpool Museum

Bringing the Brand-New Liverpool Museum to Life

The brand-new Liverpool Museum is more than just a building, it’s a bold statement of history, innovation, and creativity. Behind the scenes, our team was there to ensure every inch looked as spectacular as the vision itself.

Tasked with industrial blast cleaning and applying high-performance industrial coatings, we treated nearly 1,000 tonnes of structural steelwork and applied around 20,000 litres of paint (that’s enough to cover about 11 football pitches), transforming raw steel into a gleaming, protected masterpiece. Blast cleaning revealed the unblemished beauty of each surface, while our industrial coatings provided durable protection against time, wear, and the elements.

With every careful application and precise finish, our work helped turn the museum’s vision from concept to reality – creating a cultural landmark designed for both beauty and durability.

From concept to completion, we helped the Liverpool Museum shine—strong, safe, and spectacular.
